One of the physicians most valued employees is the one who does the insurance billing. Learn billing techniques and how to analyze and solve difficult billing problems and claim denial management. Learn how to identify and use industry-specific forms and healthcare privacy and security issues This program starts with an Introduction to Medical Insurance Billing including how to code claims using required, CPT, ICD9 (future codes ICD10) and HCPCS codes, learn how to bill private insurance and government insurance plans. The students will also be introduced to the California Workers’ Compensation industry. This course includes 24/7 access to a web-based medical billing software package that will be used to set-up a mock medical practice by creating a database with all the pertinent information necessary to process paper and electronic claims. Prerequisite: Able to understand English and have basic computer/internet skills.
 
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to demonstrate and understand the role of the insurance biller by following Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act (HIPAA) procedures; rules and regulations to ensure privacy of medical claims information and protected health information.  Additionally, the course will cover training on performing billing and collections tasks for patients treated in outpatient and inpatient settings and on selecting appropriate treatment and diagnostic codes for the preparation of claims to be sent to insurance companies (paper and electronically) for reimbursement of services.  The student will also learn how to bill commercial, private, HMO/PPO, Federal and State insurance plans, including eligibility, coverage and reimbursement methodologies.  Learn to perform tasks associated with accounts receivable and revenue cycle.  Enrollment in this course includes 24/7 access to web-based medical billing software that will be used to set-up a mock medical practice by creating a database with all pertinent information necessary to process paper and electronic claims, and run practice management reports. Prerequisite, ability to understand English and basic computer/internet skills.The $100 materials fee is included in the cost of the course. We have student parking in level P2 located underground at the Cesar E Chavez Campus at 1901 Main Street. To access the underground parking, head south on Main St. and turn right into the driveway behind the campus.  We also have a parking structure located at 1902 National Ave. Permits are required for both places. Permits are free for students and are available at the campus. Parking permits are not required for Saturday classes.
